Purdue Study Reveals Education's Impact on Food Choices and Consumer Awareness of Regenerative Agriculture

Survey Highlights Gap in Sustainability Knowledge and Persistent Food Insecurity Challenges.

The latest Consumer Food Insights (CFI) report from Purdue University's Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability (CFDAS), in partnership with DIAL Ventures, sheds light on how educational attainment influences food preferences and sustainability behaviors. Based on a survey of over 1,200 American adults, the study reveals that taste and affordability remain top priorities across all education levels, while higher education correlates with greater emphasis on nutritional value. Notably, 71% of consumers have limited familiarity with regenerative agriculture, and support for such practices decreases when costs are passed to consumers. The report also highlights that food insecurity is most prevalent (31%) among those without college education, while food inflation expectations for the next year have decreased to 2.8%. These findings underscore the complex interplay between education, food choices, and sustainability awareness in shaping consumer behavior.
